I stumbling around in the dark. I killed a tsnlsnr process thinking I could restart it to restart the listener and pick up a new instance defined in listener.ora and tnnames.ora. When I paste the command that was running all I get is:

/opt/bin/oracle/app/oracle/product/8.1.5/bin/tnslsnr LISTENER -inherit
NTP0 29735

and the command line prompt does not come back. Help! What do I do? Thanks.

Oh yeah: SunOS 5.7, Oracle 8.1.5

scohan,
It seems from your description that you "pasted" text from your screen on the unix prompt, may be you are pasting whole line, well all I mean to say is in the process something is not right.

Try this instead.
<UnixPrompt>lsnrctl <ENTER>
lsnrctl> start <ENTER>

or

<UnixPrompt>lsnrctl -start &

Thanks. After I posted and stopped panicking, I figured out I should be using lsnrctl. Thanks again.
