So, I just aquired a LaserJet 4plus with an internal JetDirect card. I'm gonna guess that simply plugging the printer into the network will not work. Can someone give me a rough outline of what I need to do to be in business? All computers on the network are XP, no domain (all peer to peer). I've also got 1 mac I need to print from. Any help would be appreciated.

There is a utility for the JetDirect to set up the jetdirect card... but an easier way is this:

Print a configuration page, look at the IP address of the jetdirect card, temporarily put a computer on the same subnet as that IP address, and telnet into it.

You can change your IP address, netmask, etc. at that point on the JetDirect card.

Somenoe told me that JetDirect wasn't capable of receving a DHCP lease. Is this correct?...if so, how do I go about assigning a static IP address? (delete the printer from the DHCP client table and then manually assign an IP address at the printer (192.169.1.2xx for static IP's on a Linksys?), correct?

Hi,

First off you can configure the printer to receive a DHCP address but you will be better off assigning a static IP. This way the IP never changes and users will not need to recreated it if it did change.

Second you can assign a static or DHCP address at the printer itself through the menu.

Perfect.....my DHCP address hardly ever change (today was the first time in over a year), so I think I'll go with that....if I have problems I'll go with static.....now, anybody have a PDF or know where to get a PDF of the manual, so I'm not blindly hunting around the menu?

just make a reservation on your dhcp server and configure it for the mac of the printer.

that way you'll use dhcp and it'll still be static
