I have an Orders Form modeled as closely as I could to the Northwind example. In my subform for detailed orders, when I link the master and child by the orderId, I get a message saying it's too complex and I should assign some things to variables. I get this message when I open the orders form and then the suborder form doesn't show up after I click ok. If I leave the master and child blank the subform works but of course I get every detailed order line that customer ever had.

I have no idea what the error is talking about!!!! Like I said, I didn't change very much from the Northwind. Some fields were added and deleted (i modified the queries to handle these fields) and the way I handle products is different. Please help if you can.

One other thing I sometimes get but I doubt anyone can help me with is when I go to design mode on the orders form, the subform on very few occasions doesn't show up. So I go back to form view and then back to design and it shows up. Wierd?!?

Bengel,
On your second point, Access 2000 has some very bizzare bugs, I have experienced exactly what you mentioned and worse, on occasion they've disappeared forever or have corrupted the database! Other oddities regarding form code modules, etc. I stopped using A2000 over a year ago, and when I use Access, it's '97. There is little in 2000 that compels me to use it if a desktop db is what's called for.
So, the first point, it sounds like you may have added fields and renamed one of the existing linked child/master fields? Have you tried re-creating the underlying query that Access creates when doing the Child/master link. Try that and see what happens.

Thanks for your reply. I am rapidly learning the misgivings of Access 2000!

As for the re-creating the query. If you mean, have I deleted the references to the subform and the child/master fields, closed and saved the form, then reopened and re-created the references, then yes. Otherwise, I am not sure of any way to re-create the underlying query. I have also re-created the queries for the order form and for the oder details based on the new fields if that is what you mean.

BTW, here is the exact error I am getting when I set the child and master fields to OrderID: "The expression is typed incorrectly, or is too complex to be evaluated. For example, a numeric expression may contain too many complicated elements. Try simplifying the expression by assigning parts of the expression to variables."

I have been at this road block for two weeks and was hoping to have this done by the end of the month. Needless to say, I am probably not going to make it. But thanks for again for your reply.

Dear Bengal3
Just a quick check, are the OrderID fields in both forms Autonumber
or is the Order Mainform field Autonumber and the subform field Long Integer as it should be
Also are the relationships correctly set up?
regards
Jim
