how do you spawn a dqy file?
_spawnlp(P_NOWAIT, "dqyfile.dqy", "dqyfile.dqy", NULL) gives an error -1.

Sorry, I don't want what is dqy file. If it's a renamed exe or com, set full path in spawnlp 2nd (and 3rd) arg. Check errno to recognize why spawnlp can't start process. Windows can't start non-executable format files.
Path search defaults are common cause for this troubles.
