help sound does not work...

This may be a simple question but I have a friend.. who has sound problems.. the computer has just been formatted.. all drivers were installed back into system.. *device manager - no bangs* sound drivers installed..
shes running windows 98

The problem is:

When she plays the winamp.. and AIM at the same time.. she can only hear the sound of one.. before the computer was formatted.. both sounds could be heard at the same time...

I have uninstalled and reinstalled sound drivers.. updated them.. still nogo..

what did i over look ??

Have you checked your volume settings to make sure that nothing is muted?

Which one? Are you saying that if you stop using one, then the other starts working? In other words according to your description, sounds from both do work as long as it is running by itself. Is that right?
