Hi,

I have a new Cisco 871 router. This is my first time using a Cisco device, so it's going to be a learning experience.

I have a comcast cable modem (DHCP service) going into the WAN port of the router, and my local network connected to the first switch port on the router. It seems like a very simple task, but I've spent hours messing with the CLI and the latest version of SDM while reading what little newbie friendly documentation I can find on the web, and have had no luck routing this cable connection.

Can anyone link me to a good detailed tutorial of how to set up a cable connection on this router?

Thank you!

Steven

What WAN port are you talking about? What all interfaces do you have? You can connect the router straight to the internet without the modem, or you can connect it to the cable modem and let the modem do all the NATting and such. Whatever interface you have facing the cable modem, you can do this...
ip addreaa dhcp
no shut

Thanks for the response, Tim

How can I connect the router straight to the internet? The router I'm using does not have a coax cable jack.

The router has 4 switch ports and 1 WAN port (called FastEthernet4).

Try this link:

You will need to substitute your isp's dns server and default gateway. In addition, don't forget to put in your own passwords.

Another thing to remember, you need to have IOS 12.2(12)T or later. Previous IOS's may not be able to get a DHCP address from your cable provider. This is due to a bug with DHCP option 60.
