I found a similar post on here, but didn't see any response or resolutions. Just that it had been closed/locked.

It's Samba version 3.0.22 (HP CIFS Server A.02.03).

I get the following when I run "smbstatus":

"Server's Role (logon server) conflicts with server-level security"

I try to connect from a windows xp pc with the correct login name and password, but it prompts me for username and password.

Please help.

Set to "user" level security instead of "server" level security and I can now access the server. What the difference in the two levels of security?

Server level security was from when Samba was not able to participate in a domain. There's warnings in the Samba documentation to avoid this mode for a few reasons, most of them security related.
