Trying to connect a remote site to a Main site. Can ping each machine that is plugged directly into the router and used to setup the router, but, can't ping anything either side like the servers and other workstations.

2 * Netopia R5100 routers using PPP over a 64k kilostrem connection.

main site server 192.168.0.1
remote site server 192.168.1.3

Main site router IP address 192.168.0.194 255.255.255.0
Gateway setting set as 192.168.0.194
Destination IP address 192.168.1.1

Remote site router IP address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0
Gateway setting set as 192.168.1.1
Destination IP address 192.168.0.194

I am unable to ping anything from any PC to the other site with the exception of the workstation that is connected directly to the the router and used for configuring.

I have tried adding a client gateway on the workstations but that only allowed me to ping to the router at that repective site.

Has anybody any idea where I am going wrong. All HELP much appreciated.

Thanks in anticipation

For one thing, the gateway needs to be the other router. Also the destination IP should have a subnet mask setting. Set as follows.

Main site router IP address 192.168.0.194 255.255.255.0
Gateway setting set as 192.168.1.1
Destination IP address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0

Remote site router IP address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0
Gateway setting set as 192.168.0.194
Destination IP address 192.168.0.194 255.255.255.0

Hi

Thanks for replying GTI4life.

I have those settings setup, Is it possible an existing Netopia router used for Internet Access and assigned it's own gateway address plus a firewall to protect the main site due to the Internet Access solution may, be preventing me from pinging other servers and workstations. Having suggested that, the reason for not being able to ping from Main site to Remote site's server and workstations points to another reason other than above, because, there is no Internet router gateway and firewall at the remote site.

Could it be the way the routers are cabled into the system, possibly?

What are your default gateway's on the devices on both sides?

For example, all devices on main should have a default gateway pointing to IP of main router and all devices on remote should have their default gateway point to IP of remote router.

A Main PC
IP :192.168.0.x ; where x= any host number on main side
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default gateway: 192.168.0.194 (main router)

A Remote PC
IP : 192.168.1.x ; where x= any host number on remote side
Mask : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway : 192.168.1.1 (remote router)

Now if you have any other routers on the network, like internet routers, than this may change.
