I think that you need the S/N from the hard drive as it, most likely, has been replaced.
Is this a project telephone system, or, one that is being actively used?
The Partner Mail is a dinosaur. Upgrading to an Avaya Partner Messaging, or Partner Voice Messaging (if the processor is one that supports the PVM) might well be worth it given through age of the PM and that the entire Partner platform has been discontinued.
If the hard drive was ever replaced then the serial number won't match the sticker on the unit unless it was re-serialized. As TTT wrote, you can connect via the serial port and login to see the current serial number.
