i have both of these viruses left on my computer

Trojan.Bootconf virus and W32.HLLP.Kindal@mm virus.

after removing a number of viruses utilising norton antivirus. The remaining 3 viruses i have namelly 2 Trojan.Bootconf virus and one W32.HLLP.Kindal@mm virus, norton will not remove.

in following sysmantecs removal instruction i sacrificed all my system restores by deactivating this feature of xp in order to enable me to remove these virus, However upon updating virus definitions running a scan norton would still not repair delete or quarantine any of the infected files leaving me still with an infected machine.

these are the location of the files which if you look for are hidden or not there

The file C:\WINDOWS\systask32l.exe is infected with the W32.HLLP.Kindal@mm virus.

The file C:\WINDOWS\default.css is infected with the Trojan.Bootconf virus.

The file C:\WINDOWS\systask32l.exe is infected with the W32.HLLP.Kindal@mm virus.

These locations also dont seem to be in system restore locations any way but i still cant remove them.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can anyone help

thank you

Hi

1. Run this :-

2. Do this :-

Please Download hijackthis from

Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

After the scan has finished the "scan" button will turn into a "save log" button

save the log file and paste it here

Do not delete anything yet, as most things hijackthis finds are harmless and needed.

Let's clean the log up first

Close all browser windows - run hijackthis and tick to fix :-

Reboot and find the file winupdate.exe in c:\windows and the folder P2P Networking in c:\windows\system32 and delete both. You may have to delete P2P Networking in Safe Mode (press f8 on boot up to get the boot menu).

then do a search for the sys.reg file in c:\windows and delete it

Read this carefully - especially the removal instructions at the bottom of the page

I don't know why the above link is not showing correctly - maybe because there appears to be an e-mail address in it.

Copy and paste everything between the quotes

http.............to..............html and you should get the page

thanks again for you r help you have been great

steam

hi i did receive your to post so i will follow that line of enquiry now in the hope of resolving this problem. However i am calling it a day as i ve been at it all day and dont fancy registry editing with sleepy eyes.

Can i just bug you one more time ( providing this works)

i just need your reasurance realy are these values diefinatelly right as i am well aware of the danger of incorrectelly editing registry. Do you advise that i back up the registry to do this or will this beck up the virus files

foir futrue reference how did you know that it was those files that i had to edit . how can you tell

Also files that i am fixing with hijack fix such as winupdate and p2p are these now removed from my machine making any applications obsolete, i.e. will i neeed to run another winupdate

i am also quite concerned about deleting sys.reg will this be totally removed now what did it do in the first place.

Domt think that i am questionin your knwledge at alll i just need some reassurance as to taking these final step as you understand people can tell you anything on the internet, and i really dont want to make thing worse

A few more points do i have to take these steps while my system restore is off still or can i turn it back on now??

What do you mean by Safe mode

At what stage of booting up my computer do i press f8 (immediatelly after turning it on??????????)

I am assuming that the link to symantec you have provided is there advice on remmoval instructions which i have found but not done yet as it was to be my last step after removal

Thakns again for all your assistance and sorry to be a pain, hopefully i can be of assistance to you some day but i may not beable to as you sound pretty clued up yourself

cheers again

hi steam any further advice

im just a bit paranoid about takin these next steps dont wanna mess anything up

Steamwiz is quite adept at this, so you're not being steered wrong. However, if you're antsy, try one of these removal tools first (for the bootconf problem):

For Q-hosts variant:

For the CWS variant of bootconf:

Ands, here're Symantecs specs on removal of Kindal, FYI...

You should always backup the registry before editing - if all gos well you can delete the backup later

But you don't need to edit the registry for what I have told you - HIJACKTHIS will delete the keys for you (and it makes a backup, so you can reverse it if you want)

sys.reg is not a windows file - it is a hijacker (coolweb- something the shredder missed)

Those with Kazaa seem to be getting this P2P Networking folder along with trojan files like winupdate.exe

They have been removed from many startups with no problems

Do this then we'll work out why you are not getting rid of the virus - the online scan should get rid of it completely.

some how there is a virus in my pc and trying to install anti virus software it dosent let it install what to do next
please help me
dkchandail@msn.com

dkchandail, you should start a new thread for this problem instead of adding on to someone else's. In the meantime, try a few of these faq760-3862.

Hey Steam

the prolem of the kindal worm continues, can you offer me any more assistance, as i have taken those step and the thing still wont shift i was well gutted as i have put so much time in and you have given me so much help

here is my progress

after succesfully using hijack this to remove the values that you told me to

then used the safe mode to delete P2p networking and sys.reg
folders and files however the winupdate that you advised me to find did not appear in many searches at all so could not be remved as you advised. ( this could be why i still have the virus)

After doin that i used the symantec link that you prvided to delete the values in the registry as that is the ojnly part of the problem that i had not yet done.

i was sucessfully able to restore the registered owner to me

and return the SFCDisable value to 0 as both had been changed, by the kindal virus

the keys

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

but there was no

"SysService32"="%Windir%\systask32l.exe"

which symantec said to delete.

The trojan virus does appear to be tatally gone by usign the CWshredder liek you advised but again i edited the registry like symantec advises

again the keys acould be located iun the registry but the values symantec advised did not seem to be there.

What can i do now,

have i done it wrong, does it effect it that i did not do all these step all in one go

thought i have follewed symantecs removal instractions should i alos try to change things that it specifies in the technical detail in the regisry as some are different to that of the removal instructions

norton is now finding W32.HLLP.Kindal@mm in the usual C:\Windows\systask32l.exe where it has always been.

and when my computer was left on for along time with norton auto protect on it eventually automatically found it in

C:\systemvolumeinformation\_restore{9478...\40000094.exe

however it does not alway do this, and this may have been deleted when i turned off xps system restore function

can you offer me any more advice

i have set up a new post to assist me also as now my problem appear to be the kindall worm as opposed to that and the trojan that i had before

thanks
