HELP PLEASE!~ trying to resize to a certain kb

I'm trying to resize a rather large(7.49MB) TIFF image to a 100kb jpeg for the web. I can't do it. I resize the image and in the dialog box after I've gotten it to the size I think I want I save it and it's ten times bigger than what I saved it as! UGH! THEN I email it and it's another size!

What's going on?! Is the 55K in the dialog box for image size not 55kb?
PLEASE help I have to have this done soon!

Are you saving on a Mac? Are you using the 'Save for Web' function instead of 'Save As'? What version of Photoshop is being used?

I'm not sure how you're going about it, but try this:

Open your image and go to File > Save For Web...

On the right hand size of the dialog, nearly at the top, there is a fly-out menu. Click on that and select "Optimize to File Size". Pick the size you want the image to be (100kb in your case), and click ok. Photoshop will try to change the settings to get your file down to that size, or as near as possible.

If you can't get close enough to the size you want, go to the image size tab in the same dialog, and put in smaller dimensions (click apply to make them take effect). Then go back to "Optimize to File Size" and try again.

Thanks so much I think the Optimize to File option worked! I had to monkey with it a bit to get it right at 100kb but it's so much easier! Thanks again!
