Hi
I have a small network with 5 computers, it is connected to an 100mb hub(i can also use an 10 mb hub), i have an adsl connection and i would like to use a cisco 2501 router to share adsl. Is it possible???? This router only has one ethernet port, but i can get another 2501 router and connet them both, this way i have on ethernet for adsl and other to connect to the hub. Any sugestions??????

Hmm... A few points to consider, vitor1:

* First of all, if you already have an ADSL connection (phone line + ADSL modem/router), then it seems you don't need a router at all to share access to the Internet. You already have what you need (including the hub).

* The Cisco 2501 router's only Ethernet connection is an AUI port, so you'll need a RJ-45/AUI transceiver to use it. As it works at only 10 Mbps, it won't work with your 100 Mbps hub.

* Do you want to use the Cisco 2501 router to replace an ADSL modem/router? You can't, as far as I know. This model wasn't designed for this purpose. (Just in case, the the AUXiliary port is only for plain dial-up connectivity to the router).

What do you think? What do you really want to do?

The only reason I can see him needing to use the router would be to perform nat, in which case he would be stuck using nat on a stick. Not exactly the most pleasant of ideas. Also if that was the case I would just go pick up a nice cheap liksys box with all that already designed for sharing adsl. Unless he's doing this just because he wants to play around and learn things.

Hi
Thanks for your quick reply.
I only have an usb modem(not router), yes, tschouten you are right, i would like to setup the network this way to give some use to the router share connection(direct acess) and learn. My ideia:
Set the router to dhcp <--- this way if i leave he router always connected i keep the same ip. Correct?????
This way i can leave all my pc´s off and with a magic ping(wake on lan) start it up.
So, it seems that isn´t possible. Is there any router(must be cisco(certification)) that i could acomplish, learn cisco ios, share adsl and protect my network????

Finally, is it possible? I also want to know, thanks

hi
I have search all over the net, but i think its not possible, i have posted my ideia to see if someone agrees, but no answer till now. For what i know the only router in the 2500 series that allow adsl share is 2514, it has two aui ports and this way u can connect one to the modem and the other to hub or directly to the pc.

thanks

Vitor

I see, if I want to share the internet using NAT, i need to get the 2514 router on 2500 series. right?

You would need at least IOS version 12.1, and you could use the 2501 but you would have to use NAT on a stick. Which if you want I can't create a short HowTo on how to use a single ethernet port for that purpose. If you have the 2514 hey all the better two ports you can use nat the regular way.

A couple of things to remember, all the ADSL modems remember the mac address that they supplied the initial DHCP address host. So you will need to unplug and reset your modem after connecting everything. (Or change the mac on the 2514 port to match that of your original host..or personal computer).

You know what for NAT on a Stick I'm not going to write a HowTo or anything. Just going to point you to the Cisco HowTo Configuration I doubt I could make it any better.

hi
Thanks a lot tschouten for your post, but with nat on a stick, how do i phisicaly connect the modem to the 2501 router and to the hub???

Thanks a lot
Vitor
