Has anybody here ever tried a 'successful' remote disaster recovery on Windows 2000?

The setup is:
a. Manager
- NT 4.0 SP6, BrightStor EB, DRO
b. Client
- Windows 2000 Server, BAOF, BA for SQL

I did a full backup of the client (w/o error), crashed the Win2k (client) and tried to restore using the Win2k and DR diskettes.

As the setup prompted for the BrightStor CD (it still says 'ARCserve' though), it looks for 'aslog.dll', which ironically can only be found on the Manager.I pressed 'Esc' since no file can be found on any CD.

Again, after reinserting the Win2k Server CD and SP1 for a couple of times, setup can't find apcompat.inf and SP1.cab (it's in Win2k CD:\i386\NEW). 'Esc' was the option to skip the files.

So the Win2k Server restarted, and restarted, and restarted, and...., it won't stop!!!

Just like in ARCserve 2000 wherein the remote DR was also failure. Any idea? Has anybody of you tried remote DR?

Hey Kewl,
It's alllllll gooooood. firstly, remote DR on win 2k with ARCserve 2000 was a success for myself. The environment? 2 x windows 2000 Advanced servers in a cluster. absolutely successful.

My questions to you are:
did you do a full backup using computer name resolution?
then did you write your Dr diskettes?

Is this Brightstor Enterprise Backup Service Pack 1 or no service pack?

I have seen an issue or two with windows 2K incorporated windows CD's. Try a win2k Cd without the integrated service pack. But then it raises the problem of incompatible windows versions. Hence lo and behold, you will be required to edit a file on the diskettes.

answer the above questions, and if the scenario fits I'll let you know how to edit.

good luck,

guru

Hi Guru.

Answers:
1. I used the IP address of the client machine (Win2k). Why do I have to use Mach. Spec. Option? I thought it was just a workaround in ARCserve 2000 SP3 for DRO.
2. I created the (4) Win2k boot diskettes and (1) BrightStor DR diskette (Machine Specific)
3. No BrightStor Service Pack since it does not have a fix for DR problems, as shown in CA support page.
4. I used Windows 2000 Server CD (w/o the SP1) and Windows 2000 Server SP1 CD.

I think I really have to edit some files in the diskettes since there are some files that can not be located during the DR process, e.g.:
- aslog.dll (found in Backup Manager only)
- apcompat.inf (?)
- spcmdcon.sys (?)
- SP1.cab (located in <Win2k CD>:\NEW\)

When the warning info (e.g. “The setup cannot copy the file:aslog.dll”) appeared, I pressed <Esc> to skip the said file/s since the setup can’t find (them), and I myself can’t locate (them) too.

After the 4 diskettes and CDs (Win2k Server, Win2k SP1, BEB) were done, the server restarted, and restarted, for nth time. It did not even asked for the 5th diskette (DR Machine Spec.)

Thanks a lot.

correction on 'Answer 1'. It should have been 'Computer Name Resolution' not 'Machine Specific'.

Sorry.
