Newbie here, I just got a copy of Netware5.0. Now I wanted to try install service pack 6a. How do I run it?. Do I run it in the console?. The CDROM is mounted and Im trying figure it out how to access the cdrom. Any help I would appreciated.
First, if you CDROM is IDE, be sure youhave the drivers for IDE loaded. If it SCSI, be sure to have the SCSI driver loaded for your controller. Second, you need to load the NLM called CDROM from command prompt. Then you would use the NWCONFIG utiltiy to install the SP. I am assuming you have decompressed the exe file you downloaded from Novell and have burned the files onto a CDROM. You would then go to the product installs section of the NWCONFIG utiltiy and go to the install unknown programs section. You are prompted for a path, the default will go to A: Change this to go to <CD_VOLUME_LABLE>: and enter in the path to the IPS file located at the root of the SP directory you decompressed. The install will walk you through the rest.
FYI 5.0 is no longer supported by Novell, you should play with either 5.1 or 6.0 if you want to learn NetWare. Both versions currently have an SP overlay image download avilable on Novell's support site. This will make it much easier for you to get a system going with the SP already installed. I have also been told by a local SE that there will also be a 6.1 release this year. Brent SchmidtCNE,Network +

Hi,
Thanks for replying. I did decompressed and burned in the cdrom. I even got to a part where it ask you for the path. Thats where I got stock. How do you know whats the volume name lable?. The 5.0 has NSS and CDROM.NLM is already preloaded, 'cuz I have try to enter "load cdrom.nlm" it pop up an message saying this module it arleady loaded.
Once again, how do you read the volume label on the cdrom?.
Can I copy entire folder into Sys volume?
You can copy the folder to the SYS: volume if you choose.
There are also three ways to find out the CD volume lable with in NetWare.
When you burn the CD, you gave the CD a volume name, thats your volume lable. If you left it as default as most people do, it is just some string of numbers. When I burn my SP CDs I like to give the CD the volume lable that matches the root directory the compressed file creates. Then I burn the files right to root of the CD. Makes it easy to walk someone through the process, because then I don't have to ask them what the number string is for volume label.
One new feature in NetWAre 5 is you no longer have to mount the CDROM, the system does it for you. When you insert the CDROM, you will see a message on the console saying there was a media change. Soon after you will see the system auto mount the CDROM. You will see the CD volume label there.
The last place is if your CD is already mounted; type in VOLUMES at the server console to find out the CD volume label is. Brent SchmidtCNE,Network +

Sounds like you just don't have the CD mounted, check the ROM controller type (IDE or SCSI) and be sure you have the right driver loaded for the proper controller. Brent SchmidtCNE,Network +

Ok, I checked, its does see my LiteOn 52x cdrom. I did it in 2 ways. One was from the console and if i entered "List Devices" it shows me 20Gig WD and LiteOn52x cdrom and the 2nd was from the "nwconfig" under storage volume. So it does see it. I can mount and dismount without any problem. I just dont have to access to cdrom..bummer
You have typed CDROM at the console to load the CD drivers???? -----------------------------------------------------
"It's true, its damn true!"
-----------------------------------------------------
Thats what i did, I copied the sp6a to my Sys volume. Yes that work, but what if I want to install from the cdrom?? What if I have a software that I want to install. How would I get around?
b) Load CDROM on the server. The CD should auto-mount and tell you the volume name. Write it down. If you don't see it or miss it, type VOLUMES. Ignore SYS, NSS_ADMIN and any other volumes you have created yourself.
c) In NWCONFIG when it asks for a path, just type in the volume name followed by the path.... eg.
SERVICEPACKCD:SP6A
And that is basically it. -----------------------------------------------------

Ah yes, I do remember now. When I enter "volumes" on the server console. I see only 2 volumes (1)SYS (2)NSS_ADMIN, but I dont see CDROM. If I enter "mount cdrom", it pops up a msg saying the cdrom.nlm is already loaded..doh!
How would I creat a cdrom volume then?....Im pulling my hair off here
Just create your CD in the normal way. The CD Label you give it in the CD Writer software will be the "Volume Name" in effect.
If you then put it into your CD drive (unload CDROM.NLM first if necessary), then load CDROM, your CD should be mounted as a volume. -----------------------------------------------------
