When choosing the pencil tool and just going to free hand draw is a constant struggle for me as either the stroke value that I chose does not show up and I have to re-pick the value, or it's not stroke but fill, and then I have go back and repick....I tried to "setup the values" first then choosing th pencil tool but I'm still not nailing the problem.

I read somewhere about using the "/" (slash) to reset the pencil tool value....but that hasn't worked for me.

Can someone simplify this for me. Thanks in advance.

Before you open a file or any document. Click the pencil tool. And change the width to whatever you need it to be.

Everytime you create a new document the Pencil will be that width.

You can switch between stroke and fill by pressing Shift and X.

You can just press CTRL + D or CMD + D to set the pencil to the default colour and stroke width.

Incidently you can change the default colour by having no docs open and double clicking the pallete on the left where the colour swatches are shown.

You can press CTRL + B or CMB B to bring up the stroke panel, you can then use the arrow keys to change the width of the stroke... just press enter when done and keep on drawing.

Thank you Eugenetyson. This was a great help!
