Help needed Win98 to 98SE

I wonder if anyone can help with this annoying problem. I've recently acquired a Compaq Presario which has Win98 installed, however, at the same time I also acquired a digital camcorder that came with 1394 OHCI Firewire that I wish to use on that system, the problem being this latter hard/software requires Win98SE.

I have the originals of both Win98 & Win98SE but not the upgrade disk and it’s impossible for me to do a complete format re-install from scratch otherwise I would.

So how do I remove the file/s that stops the Win 98SE disk from being rejected so I can upgrade with the Win98SE disk!

I had a similar problem a few years back from 95 to 98 but it’s so long ago I’m unable to remember how to do it.

Any advice would be welcomed.

Thanks

Well what kind of problem are you having with the Fire Wire?
Windows (even the first version) has native support for Fire Wire built it. Try installing the software anyway and see if it works. The second option is to do an UPDATE online for windows.

You can install win98se without format
boot to msdos
create a folder called win98 on the c drive
copy the win98se cdrom to the win98 directory
and run setup from there.
Hope that help

The problem with that is having to reinstall ALL applications and ensuring you can find and reinstall all the proper drivers. That would work great other wise. Updating is the best bet in this case. Unless some one knows a way around the upgradeing issue with the full version CD.

Jim Is right also consider stoping everthing that starts up ie virus scanners and mem managers also i have found it better to drop to dos to rename the win.com file
