I deleted some files through task manager that I thought were interfering with my installations. When I started my computer this afternoon, the screen remained black. It did allow me into the Start Menu, however, and I did a system restore. After the system restore, the desktop remains black excecpt for the task bar. I can use the computer now, but I don't want the black screen on the desktop. Changing the display didn't help me either. Can you help me?

When you right-click on the Desktop and select View, is the check box to show Desktop Icons ticked?

Have you tried Safe Mode or logging on as a different User in Normal Mode?

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

If you have several System Restore points then using an even later older one may be an option.

You could try the System File Checker program.

What was the underlying problem which made you use Task Manager to delete things, and what things did you delete?

I'll star with the last question. I deleted files because I could not install anything. I got the message that there was an installation in progress, code 1500. There was not. I deleted several MSIExecute Mutex files. But what I think I did wrong was delete some that were something like crss.exe.
I can't right-click ont he Desktop. It is a complete black blank. I will try all those other things you suggestes. Thank you so much. Please let me know if this note tells you what I should do.

See how you go with the above suggestions, if they don't help you can try these too.

Startup Repair. Startup Repair is a Windows recovery tool that can fix certain problems, such as missing or damaged system files, that might prevent Windows from starting.

Linney, I did an earlier restore point and it worked! Thanks! But I still have a problem. I still can't install or unstall a program. I get an error message. Before I messed up, I was getting a number 1500 error message. Now I'm getting a message that says the same thing, but worded differently. Do you know what I can do about that?

What program failed to uninstall and what program now fails to install, include the extension such as .exe, .msi, .msu etc. What is the exact error message?

There is a Windows Installer Cleanup utility, I can't tell you whether it works on Vista, but it might be worth a try.

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

Reregister or Re-install MSI Installer in Vista. You will have to adapt the XP article (or as much as possible) to suit Vista.

Everything that I try to install including games, information from microsoft.com checking my Vista OS, Spyware eliminators. The program I was trying to uninstall was my copy of Microsoft Office 2000. It's not working properly and I can't repair it or uninstall it.

I just tried to install the Windows Installer Clean Up, but I got the same error message. It says:
"Error 1500. Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before continuing this one."

See if you have this Registry entry?

"Use this method if you receive the following error message:
Error 1500. Another installation is in progress. You must complete that installation before continuing this one.
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK to start Registry Editor.
2. Locate and delete the following subkey in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\InProgress
3. Close all windows, and then restart the computer."

You receive an error message when you install Accounting Professional, Accounting Express, or Small Business Accounting 2006

See if these are useful?

My problem is fixed. I tried disabling the UAC. I don't know if this is what did it, but when the computer restarted, it showed me what program was trying to install. It was my old printer. Since I have Vista, my printer won't scan. That part was trying to install. Thank both of you so much. I've printed what you told me, Linney, to try sometime and keep.
