Help me find a TN/LEN?

Okay, I'm new to our NEC PBX It appears to be an NEAX 2000 IVS system using dTerm Series E phones. In my old job on a Nortel phone switch, we called the blocks that connect to the PBX, the TN blocks. I see ya'll calling it the LEN block? Is that right? My question is, how can I find the TN/LEN of an extension? Okay, say I don't know where the wall jack is for an extension, which means I can't tone out a line, but I know the extension number. How can I use the extension number to find out what TN/LEN it's programmed to? Either from the PC connected to the phone switch, or from one of these Dterm phones (which I can't believe the amount of programming you can do from them on other phones) On the Nortel Switch you had to do all the programming of the phones from the termial. Anyway, thanks for any help you can give me. Also, do you know of any good "for dummies" website or manual for this model PBX that would help me with some basic Administration? I do have a DTerm Series Telephone User guide, but that only gets you so far.

First the command to find which len a number is assigned to is F52. So Cmd F52 de (extension nunber) de will return the len of an analogue. If it is a digital then you have to prefix the extension number with an F.

For the physical location on the frame you need to know where the system tails are terminated. There are 3 per Pim, Len 0000 is on the first pair, 0001 on the second and so on up to pair 24. Pair 25 of each system tail is not used so on the first tail has lens 0000 to 0023 and pair 26 (first of the second tail) kicks off with 0024 and so on up to len 0063. There are 64 lens (0000 to 0063) in each pim with 75 pairs cabled out so len 0064 kicks off again on the first pair of the first cable from pim2 which if they have terminated consecutively would be pair 76 and it all begins again.

Thanks for the info. But I think I'm still missing one piece of information on how to do this. I assume I do these commands from a Dterm phone? If so, exactly what do I press? Is there a manual that covers these basic admin steps? I can't seem to find one.

Log on with the key sequence TRF CNF * TRF CNF # this should give CAT MODE in the display. Press LNR/SPD and you should then have the COMMAND prompt.

You need the command manual and it is also worth getting the feature programming manual!
Also check the FAQs for some tutorials that will help you get acquainted with programming the system

Thanks OzzieGeorge! I just successfully did what you laid out in your posts. I have another question for you.

Is there a way to get a listing of all the extensions already set up on our switch? I could then compare that to our current phone directory and figure out if there are extensions out there that are set up but not being used and I could re-purpose them. I've downloaded the Command Manual, I'll see what sense I can make of it.

If you can get a copy of Matworx (the NEC admin software) then yes you could. However if you only have access via a dterm, the easiest way is to log on and enter a command like 1201 put in a known extension number and then step on till you are sure you have seen all those in your number range. then go into the same starting extension again and step backwards till you are sure you've seen them all. Any that are not programmed will give an error and those that are programmed will display what they are set to!

Alternatively you can go into commands 10 & 11 and step through all the lens (10 for physical and 11 for virtual). The reason I prefer to use Cmd 1201 is I get to see them in number order!
