OK, here goes. I have a Mandrake server that I have setup with Bind 9. The server has 2 network interfaces. One interface has it's own static IP on the Internet. The other interface has a static IP on our Intranet. This would be my company's authoratative host so it needs to answer queries from the Internet for my and my Mail server (both have their own Internet IP's). I also would like it to answer queries on the Intranet and be able to provide addresses for our in house systems but not to the rest of the world. I've got it working with my general fumbling around on the search engines. But I want an "expert" to tell me the correct way to set it up. Plus I'm not sure that what I've done is the most efficient way of doing things and I surely don't want to be sending needless inquiries to the root servers due to my lack of knowledge.

Thanks in advance and sorry if this sounds like a basic configuration problem.

Not really "Basic", but common. You're needing to create a Bind9 "split horizon" installation.

This is NOT simple enough to document here, but now that you know the search term is "split horizon" I think you should be on your way. Bind9's home page is found under

Good luck!

A BIG thank you goes out to thedaver! While I have not yet put this into place, it is exactly what I needed. I had not heard the terms "split horizon" until now. And while I was asking probably for more than I needed, you were able to point me in the right direction. By not trying to explain it in detail, you've given me the opportunity to teach myself through the documentation. Thanks!
