Help! I'm new!

I just started rebuilding my computer finally got all the parts and everything up and running and i go to look at my shiny 500gig hard drive, and see only 130ish gigs...so i do some searching...download the service packs it says, cool, i do it. 2 and 3...well still only showing 130 gigs..i've read a few sites, one that talks about going into the registry and i'm not terribly comfortable with that...could anybody help a nublet out? Thanks.

has plenty of information regarding this issue. Since you mention service pack 2 and 3, I am assuming you are using XP. If this is the case, then the rest of your drive will probably show up when you look using Disk Management (Start, Run..., diskmgmt.msc).

If XP is truly your OS and you want access to the full drive during an install, look into creating an XP SP3 slipstreamed CD. Here are just a couple of sites that describe the process:

You were correct, my bad, i do have Vista. So i checked the diskmgmt.msc and it does show the full hard drive but 330gigs are unpartitioned, is tehre some way i can combine them?

Somehow that hard disk became partitioned (before Vista load) and Vista has a partitioning tool built in, here's a decent tutorial:

ugh, now i feel like a total moron. I typed that last response on my wifes computer...which has vista...my computer is using a very old *XP* disc, heh, there made sure i typed it right that time.

I am unclear whether you have everything taken care of to your satisfaction. If you have 388GB of unpartitioned space, you can use Disk Management to create a new partition. Right-click on the unpartitioned space and select New Partition. Note in order to create a partition of greater than 32GB, you must format it NTFS, not FAT23. This is an XP limitation, for what reason programmed that way, who knows?

Again, I appreciate all the help with the hard drive, i got it partitioned and shows it as 330gigs. Now...i need to figure out why my sound isn't outputting, haha thanks all.
