I just installed the IIS5.1 on my PC(windows XP).

No log in required if I access the start webpage via
using following URL on my PC:

If I access the start page with the IP address of my PC:

A log in window will pop up, it promots to enter username
and password.

When I use my windows XP account to log in, it always failed.

The error messgae is following:
[
You are not authorized to view this page
You do not have permission to view this directory or page using the credentials you supplied.
...
HTTP 401.1 - Unauthorized: Logon Failed
Internet Information Services
]

Please help me figure it out.

Thanks and Merry X-mas.

On the IIS make sure you have security settings set up correctly its the first and third options...
i not got iis but it should be basic authentication..the defaults....
Check the directory make sure you have IWAM and ISUR user against it.

Thanks Traceymaryland.

The logon window was gone when I unchecked the "Integrated Windows authentication" item in the Directory Security tab.

But I still have another question, why my windows XP account can not pass the authentication check?(my windows XP account has administrator privilege)

Is your Windows XP machine part of a domain? And if so, did you enter domain credentials instead of local ones?

eg:
username: <domain>\<username>
password: <password>

I don't think anything is wrong with the security settings. The "localsgtart.asp" page maybe the problem. That specific page was created by Microsoft for the purpose of linking to the "IIS Administration Console", which controls the Web Site on your XP. And, because of that, it can only be "run" as localhost.

Try this simple test:
Copy the text below into notepad and save it as "index.asp" onto your "webroot" and see if you can open it without login.

<html>
<body>
<h1>This is a Test Page...</h1>
</body>
</html>

My machine is a stand alone PC, which does not belong to
any domain.
I tried to log on with IP address of my PC, it still does
not work:
username: <IP address>\<username>
password: <password>

You are right, localstart.asp can only be accessed on the IIS server locally.
But I still have the log on problem if I checked the "Integrated Windows authentication" item in the Directory Security tab.
