Hi, i'm duel booting ME on C: and xp-pro on D:. I haven't been in ME for nearly 2 months but went in there today and most of the programmes are missing from C: programmes folder, but an AVG scan showed they were there?

when I click on a programme through start , programmes I get an error saying the programme can't be found it might be on the network or somewhere on the hard drive, then it des a browse and says the short cut is missing and offers to fix it and does so, but MS office 2000 asks for the disc , so it's not being found.

Internet explorer and my other browsers were also missing but were fixed with the exception of IE. I tried system resore and it failed and then system restore completely vanished after the second attempt and reboot. I searched for it , and it's gone.

I therefore tried to get IE back and uninstalled the connection to the internet and I noticed another connection saying micromodem serverxxx. I guess that's a hackers connection? So I deleted that one too, tried to reinstall my internet connection using the ISP's latest disc and it failed, so I reverted back to the old disc and it successfully reinstalled IE 5.0 and then the computer eventually fixed it.

My question is, I haven't been in to ME in 2 months, so was it the last time I used it that I got hacked, or could someone hack me when I'm on Xp and get into ME on the C: drive?

And, how can I get system restore back? I really don't want to reformat as I only have a cd restore disc and not the ME disc? If I did restore using the system restore disc it should reinstall ME onto the C: and leave XP alone on the D: that's my fear having to reinstall both opps just to fix one of them?
# cheers in advance!

From your post, it sounds as if you may only have a modem connection. If this is the case, it is not likely someone wasted time hacking you. You are more likely a (paranoid) victim of dual boot problems.

My advice would be to quit wasting your time with ME. ME was and is a piece of crap. Backup your data and run with a clean install of XP! :)

First of all, the previous reply from brainfunk says it all.

ME was Windows98SE with prettier icons. It's garbage and you should throw it away.
Reinstalling with the restore disk will destroy your dual boot settings and you'll have to reinstall XP as well, so your best bet is use the ME cd to put your coffee on and rebuild with a clean install of XP.

Have you tried running ScanReg to restore the registry on ME. I'm not sure of the exact ME commands you might have better luck in the 98 forum.

These might come in handy if you decide to restore ME and have trouble starting XP.

You need to have these files in the "C" Drive, namely Boot.ini, Bootsect.dos, Ntdtect.com, and Ntdlr. Make sure you have access to hidden and protected system files via Folder Options.

You can also create a 'boot floppy' - copy ntldr, ntdetect.com and boot.ini to a XP formatted floppy to boot your XP installation.

I must say that I agreed wiv ME being a Piece of crap I used it for 3 years till it eventually corroded my hard drives data so your best idea would be to scrap ME and use XP or even Linux because ME basically was poor it had little to no sequrity on it and so it was crap so my advice stick to either XP (Pro prefered) or Linux.
