I have an Edge external drive that I need to recover the information on it. When started, it asks for the drive to be formatted. Is there away I can get the information off of the drive?? I am running windows XP
You might want to try some recovery apps. and see fi there is any recoverable data in the drive.
You could try Getdataback from runtime.org, or Google for Data Recovery Apps.
Getdataback is not free, but I'm sure if theres anything there to recover it will do so.

Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.
Thank you for the help, I did try getdataback and that did not work. It keeps saying I/O Error "Unknown Error (23)" reading sector 0 on HD129. What else can I do?
it means theres a problem with sector zero of the drive. you should be able to skip the sector, or ignore it. And continue with the scan.

I ran the test and all the sectors have that error. Is there away around these bad sectors. The whole scan showed nothing but that error(23) sector....
In that case, your hard drive, is all but dead. If you have more than a few sectors with errors, that means there's physical damage to the drive, and it can't be read.
I don't think there's any more you can do, other than send it in to a recovery specialist. They'll have tools that might be able to recover some data.

Can the drive be reused if I format the whole thing and Bite my tongue knowing I am losing that information, since there is basically nothing I can do with it.
Probably not. The sector errors indicate its physically damaged, as such, trying to format will probably fail with a similar errors. But if you already gave up on your data, you won't loose anything trying to format it.

Before I gave up, I'd try booting my system on Knoppix (Live Linux) and seeing if you can read the disk. Just download a Knoppix iso and burn yourself a CD and boot from it. It will take a long time to download (big file), but it could save your data.
I had a USB drive (Seagate) that Windows XP couldn't see at all, and Knoppix read it fine. I was able to copy all of the data to another USB drive, then partition and reformat the one with the problem, using GParted (a Linux utility).
Of course, I never really trusted the drive that failed after that...
