I have been able to connect from my OS9.1 workstation to my OS10.1 laptop via a direct TCP/IP number. I can't seem to get my OS10.1 to see my 9.1 workstation though.

I've tried both AppleTalk and TCP/IP

I pull up "Connect to Server..." and AppleTalk does not show up as an option. It seems to be on according to my Network panel settings.

If I select "Local Network" it sees my workstation's name (and itself at different IP's about 6 times) but will not complete the connection. The error says 'No file services are available'

Everything is connected through a router and a switch.

What am I doing wrong?????

Perhaps something you've already checked, but is your OS 9 machine running AppleTalk and is it currently set to share any folders? If nothing is shared out from the OS 9 side then I don't think the machine will appear as selectable in "Connect to Server..."

It not the OS 9 machine it can't see, its AppleTalk. AppleTalk needs to be visible as a choice prior to selecting a computer to connect to.

The OS 9 machine sees the OS X machine and networks fine via TCP/IP.

To answer your question, yes the OS 9 is running AppleTalk and is set to share its disks. Everything was working fine for the longest time and all of a sudden the sharing ability stopped.

Open your apple talk control panel and make sure the ethernet port is chosen on the OS 9 machine. On the laptop, open the network preferences and make sure you look at the "SHOW" pop up menu and choose ethernet. You won't see appletalk as an option if you're looking at "Modem"
Keep us posted.

Actually all of those specs were properly chosen. I've done this many times before it just stopped working!

I did find a solution on Apple's website however, even though they never gave a reason for the problem. The solution is to go to system prefs>networking, create a new location, turn on Appletalk and save the settings. Then go back and select the original location that didn't work the first time and apply. Appletalk now shows up in the "Connect to Server".

It works and I have no idea why!!!

Thanks.
