Or Bitmaps. I recentky had to DUMP EVERYTHING and reinstall everything ugh!!! and now I can't see java, and it IS enabled, and all the images, even images that I KNOW are GIF or JPG save as ART or BMP. Even when I view properties it says its an ART file when I know it isn't - I made it. Plus my friends have viewed properties and it comes up as a GIF to them. EVen on my online tools they are saving as ART. I had to have a friend make me a graphic and send it to me so it would remain a GIF or JPG. Other than that ANYTHING I try to grab off of a web page including my OWN, turn to ART/BMP in the process. I know it must be in my settings somewhere but I have looked high and low and am clueless, please help me anyone, I am begging - with no shame.

Marianne

Please get in touch with me...
yestheyrefake@aol.com
yestheyrefake.net

aol & compuserve are total crap : THEY do that ;]
llok for anbother isp and it'll b fine :]

It sounds like your computer associations for .gif and .jpg are lost. Have you uninstalled your graphics programs. If you don't have a graphics program that associates .gif and .jpg it wont show as that they will show as what ever program you have that has an association with artwork i.e., .art and .bmp.

You might try uninstalling your graphics program and reinstalling and setting your file associations on the install.

Hope this helps.

I think there are some servers that can control the format of a graphics download... I may be way off base here, but I've had this happen to me before and only on certain servers. If you click on a GIF on the tek-tips site, this still happens?
Liam Morley
lmorley@wpi.edu
<a href=] :: imotic :: website :: [
"light the deep, and bring silence to the world.
light the world, and bring depth to the silence.

Okay.... I am still struggling. I clicked the Tek-Tips graphic at the left hand top of this page and viewed its properties (it showed as a GIF) but I double checked it by clicking "save as..." and it would save as a GiF, like it should be. Now, I am going to go check my site.... BRB. OKAY! It is still saving everything as an ART file or BMP. And I KNOW these are gifs or JPG. NOW! I tried my site, zy graphics and some random norse mythology site and all their GIFs save as ART as well. In my computer. I have had others go to these same sites and they are saving for them as what they are, GIFS (or JPG). I have tried everything.. It HAS to be my settings in my computer - SOMEWHERE! UGH! I feel like shooting my computer. But I CAN'T - I need it. Now, Before "the problem" when I could grab graphics it saved them for what theyr were... now I can't save anything unless I want it as an ART file, and my FP or other design programs can't configure multi media. I cantg even make graphics at Zy Graphics anymore because I can't save them as what I need them - GIFS. The next person who touches my computer or downloads a virus or a program I don't want on my computer I am going to cut off their fingers. Don't let guests use your computer. ever! :) lol

Thanks for your help, WebGodiva and Liam, I appreciate it.

what i was saying : the compuserve and aol servers and the kind of browser they make you install on the client-side - both - they do that on your computer : you can't have anything but .art image files
so the solution is to check for another isp !!
Yes. It has nothing to do with your computer. Change your ISP.

...our houseguest changed some things around and we installed some MS stuff and Adobe stuff. Plus having to dump windows and ie and everything else, we reinstalled things and NOW everything is not

uhhh where is the rest of my post???? ugh it must have highlighted and I must have pressed at key. CRUD!!!! It just isn't my week!!!!

It was a long post too!!!

... everything is not liek it was before. UGH! ok, go to my website : <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> on ANY graphic, they are either jpg or gif for YOU but when I clickon them or try to save them they become ART or BMP files, those are my only choices. It was perfectly fine last month. Everything saved perfectly. I even went into file associations and it doesn't matter what I view these graphics, or any graphics for that matter, in. They still view and save as ART.

I know AOL is bad but I am moving soon and I need this to work NOW - this is my work. My comp. is 3 years old with only 32 mb of RAM - which I know is bad. BUT! I can't afford another one just yet... :(

thanks again for your help,
M

p.s. well they aren't fake... they are "enhanced". my nails?

I reinstalled windows and any files or apps or anything are all fixed!!! That's what was done before - but I didn't do it and the person kept tweaking my system (for the better? yeah right!!!) and now I did it ll on my own, checked my sys.ini and things are back to normal. I am so thrilled it isn't funny. Seems a file had been removed out of sys.ini (registry) and the problem stemmed from there. WOO HOOO!!! Thank you for all fo your help!! I appreciate your efforts. Seems so pathetic that it was something so minor and it took teo days for me to figure it out. Oh well, ciao!
Marianne

Fix for .art files:

The .art files are set up through a preferential option in AOL. Goto My AOL > Preferences > Web Graphics. Uncheck compressed graphics and save. You may also need to insure that your using IE 5.01 and not IE 5.0. 5.0 does not have support for AOL Art Files. Once you disable compressed graphics, dump your cache and reload the page, the images should load up normally.

Jonathan
(HTML/JS/AOL)

For a quicky solution why don't you try downloading one of the free graphics
converters from either:

I do agree that it must be something in your settings. I use AOL and have been able to download .gifs and .jpgs
