Help accessing all characters in font family (Mac OS 10.9)

Hello... I am creating a mission statement poster for a non-profit that has the same verbage in several languages. Have translated the English text to Russian but need help accessing the correct characters in Lucida (or any font). I see that they are available in my Font Book, but can't access them in Illustrator 10. What steps am I missing? Am using an Apple keyboard and don't know what keys to hit in order to access alternative characters... or if the Illustrator program jut won't let me do it. Please help!

Correction... I am using OS 10.3.9

Have you gone to system preferences/international/input and selected Russian for keyboard input?
