I was hired to work on a windows network, but when I started they told me "oh by the way, we need you to admin a HP-UX network also". Anyways, I need to add a printer. I did half of it in SAM. When I print to the new printer, it prints the user, host, class and job number, but not the file. I think it needs drivers. Is this true or am I missing something else? I have very limited knowledge of Unix, so please go slow. Thanks.

BTW, The printer is an HP LaserJet 4 Plus, It's on a windows 2000 network using TCP/IP. It has a Jet Direct box, but when I try to configure it in SAM it says that I don't have the software.

You have a couple options here. Run SAMBA on the HP system and configure it to use a shared printer on the Windows box. I have used this sucessfully on Linux systems, but my luck trying it on an HP system was not very good.

The best way I have found is a program called WinLPR from They have a 40 day trial version and the program only costs 25.00 per PC if you decide to buy. It installs on the Windows box where the printer is located and you can be printing in 10 minutes after you install it.
I think it is the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Hi Lyonmt,

I guess that you are missing the jetadmin software, to check run
#swlist | more
from the command line.

If it's not there then you can download it free from the HP web site, ot if memory serves, it's on the HP-UX quarterly applications CD's.

If you're going to install, write another quwestion in the forum, and we/I will explain about mounting the cd and the install procedure.

I must say though, that I think you've been put on, coming into a job and being expected to pick up HP-UX - it's a completely different environment to Windows.

The satisfaction will far outweigh the sweat though......

Best of luck
Queenie.

Thanks Queenie.

I tried to install the Jet admin software from the HP CD that I have, but I could not figure out how to mount the CD-ROM. I tried a great many commands, but I don't know the name/number of the CD-ROM. How would I figure that out?

You are definitely right about the satisfaction part. Everybody I tried to get help from (Help desk, supervisors, consultants) Have no clue. When I figure this out, I will feel pretty good.

Hi Lyonmt,

There are more than one way of accomplishing your task, but the following steps are certainly proven at my shop.

1) # swlist | more
should reveal "HP JetDirect Printer Installer for Unix"

If it is not there you could simply installed it from the CD provided together when the laser printer was purchased.

a) # cd /
# ioscan -funC disk
take note of the device name against the description
of " xxx CD-ROM " , eg /dev/dsk/c2t2d0.
# mkdir SD_CDROM
# mount /dev/dsk/c2t2d0 /SD_CDROM

b) # cd /SD_CDROM/UNIX
# more INSTALL.UNX
follow the instruction pertaining to the version of
your HP-UX. You will be required to copy a HPxxx.SD
file to /tmp and subsequently to swinstall from this
directory.

2) # sam
start sam and move on to the printer section
=> Printer and Plotters
=> LP Spooler
=> Printer and Plotters
=> Add Network-Based Printer/Plotters

3) You will be presented with JetDirect Main Menu.
Please select as follows:
option1 => Spooler Administration.
option1 => Add printer to local spooler.
Enter either the network-name or IP address of your
printer.

I'm a AS/400 system administrator and was also similiar tasked.

Good Luck
Terry Song
