hello,

i was wondering if anyone knows of a piece of software that allows me to backup my primary drive in to an image then put that on to a logical drive and then if ever the primary drive got corrupted i can boot (using a boot menu on the c drive) into the logical drive and a program runs automatically allowing me to run that image and extract it on to the primary drive.

please this would solve one massive headache for me.

if their is more than one software then plese help me!!!

unfortunatly my laptop does not have a usb floppy or a cdrom drive and it doesnt allow me to boot from a usb floppy or a usb cdrom. that is why while i have win2000 i can set up a backup that does things automatically from the hardisk.

Just something you may need to be aware off. If you harddrive fails both your logical and primary partitions will more than likely be lost. the only semi-fool proof way to do this to have a seperate hardrive to back up to.....

thanks that would be ideal but i cant add on a second hardisk to the laptop. but if you have any suggestions as to another solution to my problem then i would like that.

I have thought of buying norton drive image or norton ghost, i think this software would allow me to create a backup but will they allow me to boot in to a logical drive so i can extract that image to the primary drive. ??

Again
- if the harddrive physicaly fails all partitions(logical and primary) will be corrupted or lost- so there is no point creating a backup of your data on the same physical disk as the data is stored on-even if its on the same partition.
Can you backup your data to a network drive?

Kippy13 is right. If your disk crashes then you have probably lost everything. If you can't read the primary partition, then you probably can't read anything. If I understand your question and laptop configuration, the most thorough safety can be achieved by using two methods of backup to cover you in two types of disasters. Disaster one is if your hard disk crashes. Remember, all software can be reinstalled so you don't have to back that up. Buy an inexpensive external CD-RW and periodically back up your critical data. It's a good idea to organize that critical data to make this back up as effortless as possible. This is about all you can do to prepare for a hard crash other than having all restore CD's, emergency repair and start-up disks that you may need. Also, if you are really paranoid, you can store all of your software install disks in some location such as a safe deposit box. Disaster two is if your operating system in the main partition starts acting up or becomes corrupted to the point that it will not boot. One slip in regedit without a registry backup can do the trick. This is where Partition Magic and Ghost can really save you a ton of time and effort (I advise using both). Use these two backup methods frequently and you should be about as safe as possible.

"Roxio" has a feature to create and write a disk image to a
CD. I can not write a multi cd image just a single cd or about 799 mbytes.

it may be able to create any size and save it to a hard disk.

I bought my copy on ebay cheap.

I would agree with doubledeuce. an external CDwriter is the answer to your problems.

With Norton Ghost, you can also create a DOS-Bootdisk.
Create an image of your HD with Ghost and burn the image on CD.
If it is too large, you might be able to split it into several images - I'm not so sure about that.
But: a partition image of your system only should suffice for one CD.

With a DOS-Boot disk, you can then select "Local" as data source and play your image on HD.

The HD partition will be overwritten, you might also reformat first.

You could then create an image of your data partition, split the image if necessary. Once you have played the system back on, you could store the image on HD, recombine and restore your data partition.

Would that be a solution?

hi guys, thanks for your replys but, i just want to make clear that i always back up my data on to a usb hardisk, so that ok, unfortunatly i think you may of missed the point of what im trying to say, i understand that if the hardisk fails i will have to get another etc.... . but what i am saying is that this laptop i have doesnt allow me to boot from floppy or an external cdrom. or a network. so your proberbly wondering how i got windows 2000 on it?. well i put the hardisk in to my other laptop that allows me to boot from a usb floppy and cdrom. i installed xp on it and then i copyed the contents of win 2000 on to the c drive and also made the c: drive bootable in to dos, then i deltreed (deleted) windows xp. i then put the hardisk back in to the other laptop (the one that can only boot from the c: drive) and booted in to dos, i then manually setup the win2000 program which then installed and everything worked the usb etc..... . just to save me hassle next time if windows 2000 gets corrupt i dont want to got through this again. i do understand if the hardisk goes i will have to go through this (possible)agian. now this is where i need help since i can boot up in to dos. i was wondering if there was a program out there that allowed me to create and save and extract and image file from the logical partition??, as i havent used drive image, ghost programs or anything like this at all i was wondering if you guy had any knowledge about a some software that can create backups etc... in ms dos. thanks for you help and advice from before.
