hello I need help on installing sco server on a clone newbie

good morning everyone, mi name is ricardo mexican, can anybody please help me I m trying to installa sco server 5.5 on a clone machine , but I get to the point where the instalation proces asks for media I boot form the cd rom but when I try to look for the cd rom on the list that came with the instaler is not there , I have an ide cdrom, I am newbie on unix I hope you undertand I am learning, thank you for you hlep amigos

what type of machine (cpu, hd's, memory) is the clone?
if it is a p4 then you should not load 5.0.5 (5.0.6a or newer)
there could also be some memory probing issues......
are you typing anything in at the boot prompt?

When it asks you to specify the location of the installation media, you should be able to select CD-ROM, and specify where the CD-ROM drive is connected. Primary/Secondary, then Master/Slave. The default in 5.0.5 was often wrong.
Are you presented with these options? If no CD-ROM drive, then you might have an incompatible M/B.

Please heed Stan's remarks about installing that old version on current hardware.

hi everyone: the computer I{m using is a p4 ceron runing at 1.6 mhz, 256 ram, let me explain what is doing I boot from the cd rom , follow the instrucions, when I get to the point to selct media y press the space bar, I choose ide cd rom but I get a window saying there is no host adapter for what I had selected, shall I try to install it on a PIII ??? also I use this other login because I coulndt acces with mi other handle wich is exa777, thank you all for your kind support, and if you noticed mi english is not that good but I try mi best

I've had some machines with motherboards and/or bios that simply would not recognize the CD-ROM - no matter what you do. This most recently occurred in January at one of my sites. In that instance, I had to load unix by taking the hard drive, putting it in another machine with a different motherboard, loading the OS, then placing the drive back into my original machine.


You need to check 5 things:
1) to which IDE controller is the CD-ROM attached (is it on the primary controller with the hard drive or on the second one?)

2) if on a controller with another device, is it configured as the 'master', or 'secondary' device?

3) if on a controller by itself, make it the 'master'. I think I've even had luck using cable select.

4) what type of cable is used?

5) are the controllers activated in the BIOS?

If Unix can't find the device, it is usually because the device is either strapped wrong, cabled wrong, or is on a dead controller. If you are using one of the newer high density cables, you might try getting an older style cable, put the CD-ROM on the secondary controller as the 'master' device and see what it does. Failing that, put it on the Primary controller as the 'slave' device. If it still doesn't recognize the device, you may be looking at a situation similar to those that I have experienced.

hi everyone, thank you very much for your kind help I got the sco all setup, know ok let me be honest never used before but I think I can handle it, see the company I work for is thinling to migrate to this plataform we used a dabase writteng on a language called fip, know I want to ask, how can I get login form windows plataform, I have the tyni term software, the thing is I don't have a clue how to get connected from others windows based plataform machines to the unix server tha's mi next chalenge any ideas will be aprecciated , thank you vey mucho I will try google, for answer

First, you need to create user accounts in SCO using "scoadmin".
Then, with TinyTERM, you need to set the emulation to whatever your application software requires. "SCOANSI" and "wyse60" are quite common, as are some of the "VT220" modes. If you are connecting via TCP, just tell TinyTERM to use "telnet" and enter the IP address of the SCO server. If you are using serial connections, there are more steps required on the SCO system which would be dictated by the serial port maker, and you'd configure TinyTERM to use COM1, COM2, etc.

Hi evreyone thank you kindnly for your valuable help, I am very happy with te results, now mi next question is the clone I'm using come's with a integraded ethernet card, mi question is shuold I use it or install a 3com for better perfomance , sco didn't recognize tha one I'm talking about, if I download the drivers how should i tell sco where the drivers are, and also about printing each user have theeir own printer before they were using I mean printing trouh a port using digi boards cards on the old server but then cards burn whit a storm tha's when I came up whit the idea to use anoter plataform ethernet, how or can you please guide me and howto setup the printer locally, againg thank you very much for you valuable help this is great I'm setin unix for the first time

If you can download the drivers for the integrated ethernet card, install them using "custom". Where you go from there depends on how you downloaded the drivers. If you are able to create a floppy image, select that in "custom".
Custom --> Software --> Install New
Install From --> This computer
Source --> floppy (or media image if you have a VOL.000.000 file).
Installing a 3COM would be fine as well. You typically don't need anything too advanced if you are just using telnet to run a character application.

You can print to local printers in a number of ways. I think the most reliable is to install VisionFS or Samba in the SCO system and use it to configure printers which are "shared" on the PC. VisionFS is free with SCO up through version 5.0.6, and is simple to install and configure. Samba is free also, and you can find help in forum-865.
Another way is to use TinyTERM's slave-print option, in which case you need to play with the slave-on/slave-off codes in the printer interface file. TinyTERM also has their own network print-server utilities, but I haven't played with them for many years.

HI motoslide, thanks for your help, i try to install a davicom 9102af card I copied the sco files on to a floppy did what you told me but when the it is reading the driver it says examinig media then and error unable to initialize device , I click on details and it reads:
error opening volume unknown volume format , is a diskette that came with the card, so againg I am lost, also when I manage to get the ethernet card installed hopefully today, how can I tell the sco to aquire an ip address auto so I can navegate and how do I know which address teh sco has so i can connecte to the sco trough telnet, againg thank you very much and please bear with mi and mi english but thank to all of your help in this forum I am learning this new operatin system

hi againg I managed to install the ethernet card, great hu!!now sorry I ask to many dumb questions but like I said I m learning now all I need to do is setup the ip address on the card , we use a smc router wich assign addreses to all our pcs using dhcp, now i ONLY NEED TO LEAR HOW TO SETUP THE SCO SERVER TO AQUIRE THE ADDRES AND BE ABLE TO TELNET MUCHAS GRACIAS AMIGOS

As with most servers, I think it's best to give it a fixed IP, instead of dynamic with DHCP. Just pick an IP that is outside your router's DHCP scope.
As PHV said, this is all controlled using the "netconfig" utility.
If you opt for DHCP (and are successful), you can determine the current IP address by logging onto the console as root and run this command:

# ifconfig -a

If you need to examine any route entries, run this command:

# netstat -rn

hi everyone it is me again looking foe wisdom and knoledge, like I said before I have installed the sco server and terminals conenected to it using tyni term plu sdemo version, everithing is going well but on the printing side I am not able to print to usb printers, try printing directly to the device and windows printers but can' t do it, also I have oen question we have to locatiosn locatiosn A where the sco uniz is installed and location b is about 5 miles away we have 2 dsl inernet installed on each plant is there anu way i can connect to ocation a form b troug the internet ???? I was thinking a vpnet but is there any other way to do it i know vpnet is the way but I want to make a test we may be and aplication so I can prove to mi boss and convincing him to expend some money on hardware ego, routers, thank you vey much for your help amigos gosd bless

5.0.5 doesn't know anything about usb devices...
there are many different ways of connecting 2 sites through the internet..
what are you trying to do?
what routers do you have?
are they static or dynamic addresses?
are they nat translating or do you have public ip addresses?
etc?
etc?
