I got this problem on a SCO open Server 5.0.5 :
warning exit-/etc/init (PID 1) died, status 0x0000008B

and I can't log in int 1.
 
Can you go to "Single User" mode during the bootup?
If so, can you examine /usr/adm/syslog and /usr/adm/messages?
 
That's the big problem I Can't.
The System hlts with the message:

warning exit-/etc/init (PID 1) died, status 0x0000008B

 
At what point in the boot process?
Any preceding messages might be helpful just to determine how far the system proceeds before it halts.

Has anything changed since the last successful boot?
