Headset on 4412 (Merlin Magix)

Have always worked with headsets with a base unit.
Client is trying to utilize the headset port on the 4412 without a base unit.
The headset button is programmed and set for auto answer, but the headset is not picking up.
What steps are missing and do they still need to utilize a base unit?

you need a headset status button, and a hangup button in central programing
