HDD hard freezes every time a defrag is done!

Not just defrag,it even does it on Norton Speed Disk. I can't even crtl+alt+delete out of it. It never gets very far into it before freezing.Scan disk works just fine and reports no errors. Still playing with it and will update.

Some program running in the background is probably accessing the disk and causing the lock up.

Try closing all non-essential programs either by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del or going to msconfig.

This usually occurs with scandisk but can occur with defrag also.

Two other things to add;

1.This HD was doing the same thing in an entirely different system.

2. It freezes just sitting their unattended sometimes.And no,the screensaver is not selected.

Try 2 things. First, go into safe mode and do the test again. Second is more of a question... Have you done a thorough scandisk including surface scan? If not, do so. you might find some interresting things.
