yer im trying to slave it
im using windows vista and the connection is made through my external hdd, i took it apart and connected my hdd to to it n connected it to my comp, its interface is sata
model number is: hts541610j9sa00

the connection is made through my external hdd
and how is that attached to the PC, e.g. USB, eSATA, FireWire, Parallel Cables, ScotchTape, etc...

did the external HDD ever work with the Vista PC, to begin with...

The more info you give, the better and quicker the answer...

yes im connecting it with a usb and yes the external hdd did work with the computer im using to retrieve the data, thanks sorry for the bad answers lol

I would suggest, instead of the USB interface, to slave the drive directly to one of the SATA ports of the VISTA PC...

Then DL the "Drive Fitness Test" from Hitachi, burn it to a CD (see the Link below for the ISO), boot from the CD and test the drive...

if it does not get recognized in the BIOS and/or the Hitachi Tool, then I am afraid the drive is beyond repair/recovery, except through a Professional Data Retrieval company ($500+ or there abouts)...

USB drive enclosures should never ask for drivers they are working correctly (except in old Windows versions like 98 or older). T
he fact that the machine the HD was in crashed tends to point towards a problem with the actual HD.

So I agree with Ben. Sounds like the Drive has too much damage for the USB enclosure to handle it properly.

Try a direct connection to one of the internal SATA ports of the computer see if it comes up, if it does immediately transfer your data off of it.

Otherwise you may need a Professional Data Recovery Service

thanks alot guys, i will try this and get back to use

What's the model of external enclosure you're using? Some of the older ones do require a "non standard" driver and Vista may not recognize it.

I guess you have not read the answer to one of my questions above, which was quote:"yes the external hdd did work with the computer im using to retrieve the data"...

and all the USB and FireWire enclosures, I've ever seen, never needed a driver under XP or Vista...
