I have a western digital hard drive series wd2500pb. I recently took it out of 1 pc and put it in another. I use the drive for only storage. The drive is an ide drive and i combined it with the newer sata raptor drive. As soon as i tried to access my stuff i was able to, but when i tried to open a file or anything the pc would freeze and my comp would have to be restarted. i then got a blue screen saying that if i never saw this screen before i should do this and that and it went on explaining a few things basically telling me to contact someone or just restart. After a few times of this happenning my raptor drive would not load xp and the blue screen came up every time i started my pc. At this point i couldnt do much with the raptor so i used an older 80gb drive i had loaded xp on it and tried to fix my raptor drive in windows. What i ended up doing was downloading diagnostics tools for the drive and it found errors and fixed them and then the drive booted perfectly. My final problem remaining is the 1 i started out with. With the second drive i couldnt open anything unless i copied it to a different hd. so i took all my info and copied it to my os drive leaving my storage drive empty. i then tried to format and it wouldnt complete for some reason. i tried in windows and using the xp cd and nothing. i ran the diagnostics i got for the raptor drive being their both wd's but the test couldnt complete b/c of too many errors on drive so i couldnt fix the errors. now im left with nothing. I dont see how the HD could be bad b/c it did store my info before i deleted it and i then moved it to my other HD so its retaining info but has errors with opening info. Any ideas? i just want the drive to work correctly, it only about 1 year old so its not old.

Antcomp,

Did you run the WD diagnostics on the wd2500pb drive?

The last time I checked, WD had a 3 year warranty.

Use the western digital diagnostics program to write zeroes to the hard drive. After that you can format the hard drive NTFS or FAT32 as you prefer.
You can use a win98 boot disk to do the job. Put the diagnostics on a floppy, boot with win98 boot disk and then use the diagnostics.

i ran the write zeros program from windows and near the end it came up with an error 09 or something and couldnt finish, does that mean its broken and i should warranty it or is there something else i can do?

just checked the warranty and it was only 1 year and i just past it.

Sorry to hear about the warranty, or non-warranty.
You could try the zero program again, or try other programs in the diagnostics that you have.
If you cant get it going with the diagnostics from the mfgr then you may just be out of luck.
There is another hard drive program around, i just cant think of the name of it at this moment.

I had a similar problem with a drive that I couldn't erase files or format. I used XP's "computer management/disk manager" and was able to "force" the HD to format! However since your mfg utilities aren't working for you I'm not sure this'll prove to be any better...but who knows!?

Cheers

It wont hurt to try just about anything at this point.

Antcomp,
The drive probably has bad sectors or drive overlay software installed on it.

i tried the quick erase on disk managment and that worked but after i tired to full erase and no luck. i just find it weird. whats the drive overlay you are talking about installed on my drive?

Drive overlay is a program that comes with the diagnostics program that you get from the hard drive mfgr. It is used when you have an older system and a newer hard drive that isnt recognized. Instead of getting a pci ultra controller they use the drive overlay software in the diagnostics program and that allows the h drive to be used. However, very few people use this anymore as it has been proven to be junk pretty much as it always unravels when you dont want it to and you lose your data. It happened to me once and i went over to using pci controller cards instead.
However, if your drive has overlay software on it, you should be able to get rid of it.
Again, i suggest running the zero program and then trying a format. If that doesnt work perhaps the drive is just unusable.
It could even have a virus on it that has caused your problems but most likely its a matter of bad sectors and manybe too many bad sectors to the point its not usable any longer.

it was saying that it had too many bad sectors to fix, im gonna keeep trying the extended diagnostics and see if it can fix any of the bad sectors it missesd the 1st time i tried it.

Try to use spinrite, that seems to recover many bad drives which no other software can touch.
Good luck

i tired spinrite but i had it on 17hrs and it only finioshed .06%. it wont work if it never finishes.
