HI i think i am having a problem with one of my hard drives. every time i try to access information from it the computer crashes. also when i ran norton disk doctor that crashed too. windows scandisk however did not detect anything. How do i know for sure that it is my hard drive

Would expect that the OS would tell you if the hard drive was munged. Error message "sector not found" at the least. How about booting to DOS mode and see if you can access the drive. Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

Is your hard drive a slave or master ? If you have more than one drive have you considered moving the suspect drive
to a master position and seeing how it works as a primary drive or if it is already a master moving it to a slave position and seeing how well the information circulates.

What are you running on this drive ?

The hard drive is set up as a slave. it was working fine until yesterday. the drive is only used for storing audio files. the computer is used exclusively for recording music. the master drive contains windows 98SE and four or five audio programs. The computer is not conected to the internet. It is only used for one thing, recording audio.

If this drive ONLY has audio files stored on it, disconnect it, and then reboot PC after first removing drive params from the BIOS.

Does the machine run correctly now?

Also, try running scandisk from the DOS prompt and get it to check this drive (D: ?).

Is it possible for a CD or floppy disk to have passed a virus into your system?

When I disconect it and disable it in the bios then the computer runs fine. When I run scandisk from dos everything looks fine. I also did a surface scan from dos it took 6 hours and it went fine. when I use norton 2002 to do any sort of diagnostics on the drive the computer crashes. if i run diagnostics on the c: drive everything is cool. I don't think there is a virus on the system. all interaction with other computers through disks is kept to a minimum.I have no modems of any sorts
