Hello all,

I have a little problem with a HD running windows XP. I was trying to burn a CD, and the was getting an error. I shutdown the burning software, however, the CD kept running and the computer wouldn't shut off. I had to do the unthinkable and hold the power button in to get the computer to shut down. Now, when I turn the computer on, it starts to boot up then shuts down. I installed a new hard drive, and set the original as a slave. Same problem, the computer starts to boot up then recognizes the slave drive and shuts off. I had a guy try the HD in his computer resulting in the same. WE hooked it up and started a computer running Lindows, and were able to access the HD. I ripped apart my exteral USB HD and installed the bad HD in it, thinking the computer wouldn't recognize it as a HD. As soon as the computer recognized the USB port, the computer shut off. I get a warning that says the computer is shutting down to prevent damage. I turned off all my virus protection, I know not wise, but did it anyway. Didn't help. Does anyone know what is going on, and know of a way I can get windows to recognize this HD?

Can you boot with a Win98 boot disk, run fdisk, and look at the partitions? Don't worry about " non-dos partition" if you are using NTFS. If you can do this, report back on what you find.

Okay, I ran fdisk. I have two hard drives.

HD 1 is primary master.
Setup is NTFS with 38000 Mbytes, this is a 40 gig HD
Status A
HD 2 is secondary master
Setup is NTFS with 12654 Mbytes, this is an 80 gig HD that is giving me the problems.

I'm not that familiar with fdisk, so I don't know where to go after that.

Thanks for the help.

I think that "status a" = bootable. When you burn a CD, the information is saved to a temporary file on the hard drive. Looks like you "scrambled" the info on the drive. Is there anything on this drive that you need to save? If not, put it in as the only drive, boot with the XP CD, and reformat (no system). Put the good boot drive back in and the reformatted drive as slave.

I was able to find a free download for booting a NTFS file system in DOS. I was then able to scan the drive and copy anything I wanted. I then ran fdisk deleted the partions, created a partion and format the HD. It works fine now. Thanks for the help.
