Upon replacing my crashed 40 gig HD, I noticed that the HD light flashes once per second for about 1/4 sec duration. I suspect that continual HD accessing caused it's failure. I found that disconnecting the cd-rw caused the light to quit flashing. I replaced the hp cd-rw with two other, different brand units and did not cure the problem. I finally found that an Optorite 32x12x40 worked good with no flashing. I have since purchased a hp pavillion 513c that flashes. Three others straight out of the box, flashes. HP tech support has no clue.

Most of the Microsoft Windows operating systems will cause the HDD LED to flash on a regular basis. This is just normal OS polling activity and should not be a concern. This should not wear out a HDD. If it is excessive then it could be caused by software activity. You did not say what OS you are using.

Interestingly enough, setting your CD for AUTOPLAY can cause the HD access light to flash, as the system regularly polls the drive to see if a CD has been inserted. This is especially true if the HD and the CD are on the same IDE channel, as the light is actually an IDE activity light, not specifically a HD activity light.

Depending on some other factors, such as file protection, indexing and such, polling the CD could also cause the HD to write a sector or two..

Try turning off the autoplay feature and see if that makes a difference.

Otherwise, I wouldn't worry about it, as MooreManW has noted.
