I was given a NEC Ready 9616 from which I took the HD and cd-rom to build a new system. I then added a smaller Seagate HD and cd-rom from my Legend 11CD Packard Bell to the Pentium 120 NEC. I was able to load Win 3.11 to the HD from floppies but every time I plug the ribbon cable into the cd-rom, the HD stops spinning(shuts down). I don't have any documentation on the stuff I am putting together because it was all given to me. I have looked on the net for technical data but haven't been very successful. Any ideas would be helpful.

THANKS

Do you know about SLAVE / MASTER jumpers ?

You may have a jumper configuration problem. You may have to set the BIOS in the OLD NEC to get the setting right.

> How are you hooking up the CD-ROM that is creating the problem ?
Is it hooked up as a slave to the HD ?
Are you setting it up on the Seconary ?

Does this old NEC mainboard have PCI built in, or does
it have a controller card ?

I have played with changing settings in the BIOS. As far as jumpers, I see jumpers to change the moitherboard bus speed and a BF0 and BF1. They have jumpers on them at 90mhz and BF0. Other than that, there are other places on the motherboard that have much longer rows of pins but no jumpers. Without documentation, I don't know what they do.

As far as cabling the cd-rom, the motherboard has two ports or sockets or jacks that will accept the HD or cd-rom cable. When looking at the computer from the side the ports are vertical. I have tried reversing the cables and had no luck. When the HD is in the top port, it is found by the bios as the primary. When it is in the bottom port, is found as the secondary. Either way, when I plugged the ribbon cable from the second port into the cd-rom, the HD stops responding.

I did find that the cd-rom is a CR-563-B manufactured by Matsushita-Kotobuki Elec. Inc.

I don't know about the built-in PCI. All my peripherals are plugged into a riser, if that helps.

I know I haven't given much to go on.

THANKS!!!

The CD-ROM has a jumper on it that should be set. If it is on the same cable as the hard drive it should be set to "slave", if it is on the secondary IDE bus it should be "master". "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing....." [morning]
