Having two sun sparc workstations (A and B)
A: firewall
B: Standalone on same network.

"A" doesnot have any backup facility, I would like to initiate the remote backup from "A" to "B", I am thinking for both tar and cpio backup. Anybody is having any suggestions and commands for the same. Is it possible to take dump backup across the network. Thanks in advance.

I am sorry I didnot mention one more thing, "B" is not having any tap device. I have to create separate file system and take the back up from "A" to "B".

for example: needs to take hostname_A:/opt to hostname_B:/opt

#tar ......hostname_B:/opt

is it possible, pls guide me..

Provided you have rsh permissions from A to B, you should be able to use the rmt interface and ufsdump directly from one to the other.

For example, from hostname_A:

[tt]ufsdump 0f hostname_B:/dev/rmt/0n /[/tt]

You can just dump it to a file instead of a tape device such as /dev/rmt/0n if you like but you have to touch the destination file first.

Annihilannic.

"A" is Checkpoint firewall server, unfortunately my client donot have any tap drive on this machine. So I cannot enable .rhost or host.equ files on this server. How do I take the backup for / and /opt?. Let me know, which procedure is (tar or ufsdump) good?
