Could I please have someone help me. I’m new on configuring Cisco Routers and for some reason or another every time I try to configure the Ethernet port I always get the following error.

interface ethernet 0
^
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

I’ve tried using the all of the Cisco router commands of:
Config t
Interface e0
Interface Ethernet 0
Interface Ethernet 0/0
Interface Ethernet 0/1

And

Config-if FastEhternet0/0
Config-if FastEhternet0/1

and all come up with the following error.
% Invalid input detected at '^' marker.

Please note that this has happened on the Cisco 1700 and Cisco 2600 routers. Can someone please help. I’m trying the configure my router to permit the DHCP config for my home network training.

ALSO, I’m having problems with saving the “copy run start” command to my 1700 Cisco router.

Do a show ip int brief and it will give you the exact name and syntax to use for the interfaces you have on your box . If you having trouble saving , do a dir flash: and see if you have any free space remaining in flash to save the files .

Vigergg, thanks for all of your help. Once I looked into the router config I have to provide the following command:

interface fastethernet0/1

Once the command was in place everything worked.

Burt, just as a heads up the Cisco 2600 is at my job (a Trainer) and the Cisco 1700 & 2500 is what I have at my home that I got off of Ebay...

Just out of curiosity what kind of training do you provide?

Whykap, this is just for my own training. We had a 2600 router at my job that was not being used and my boss lets me try to configure it. I'm just trying to learn it so that I could have a good understanding on how they work. I took classes on CCNA in 2004 but never used it. BUT, who knows I may become a CCIE oneday. SURE!!!! Right!!!!

Thanks for the reply!

I was actually wondering if it was a 2610, 2611, 2620 or 2621---this would have given me a clue as to what the config must be, like e0, fa0, fa0/0, etc. The 2610 has one ethrenet (int e0), the 2611 has two ethernet, the 2620 has one fastethernet (fa0/0) and the 2621 has 2 fastethernet (int fa0/0 and int fa0/1). But I am glad you got it going.

Burt
