I have designed a few sites using Dreamweaver and have added the URL's to various search engines-excite,yahoo,google,etc.etc. I have tried to search for the sites several months later but they are not listed in any of the search engines. I have been told that the search engines don't like the Dreamweaver code. Is there anyone who can give advice on what I should do to remedy this.

I have several sites created with Dreamweaver listed on the big search engines. It is worthwhile looking at the requirements for the different engines and checking that your pages match these.

Also note that just because you submit to a serach engine it does not mean that you will appear straight away - some have up to 13 week delay at the moment.

Cheers

John

It is all in the METATAGS, if you are not setting up proper METADATA then the search engines will ignore you.

Use this wizard to generate excellent METADATA:
Here is an exmaple of METADATA that is very successful in the search engines:

Code:

I assumed that the sites already had meta tags - thanks for pointing them out Mike.

Cheers

I assumed by the 'level' of the question that we were delaing with a beginner. Since METADATA is usually something that is picked up at later levels of development I assumed this was the problem.

Hilda is saying her site doesn't list, not doesn't rank highly. Meta tags will help her rank higher, but they won't help her site list if it is not listing at all.

Many search engiens are now demanding money, the others seem to take forever to list you.

I have one site that ranks low on every search engine except Euroseek and google, yet ranks No.1 with Yahoo, regardless that it was never lodged with Yahoo at all?

Go figure.

It is very wise to find out what search engines require. I have a few that get their data strictly from the title others actually look at the meta tags and still others only accept the meta tag description and keywords if it is no more than a certain length or a certain number of keywords. Search engines are somewhat finicky and have been designed to be so. Search engines send out crawlers to gather the data in their own unique ways and sometimes this is done once a week...others do it twice a year. As you can see it very possibly could take quite a while to start showing up in the major engines. seems to be the best and incidentally for me seems to be the first one I always show up in. Beside keywords, It helps to make sure you use the WORDS you want picked up on the lead page. People sometimes make the mistake of using a GRAPHIC at the top of the page instead. A gif that says "Pink Poodles of Denmark" won't be seen in search engines but text saying that same phrase will.
Google eventually picks up everything but getting into Yahoo's Catagorical listings (on its front page) is a more drawn-out process. You have to pick a main catagory and wangle your way to the sublisting you want to be placed in. then submit.
