Ok, ordered parts from newegg.com

ASUS A7N8X deluxe board
corsair 1x512 xms 3200c2 PT memory
AMD 2100+
maxtor 80 gig ata133
ati aiw 7500 (4x agp)
chieftec case with 450 watt ps

had to get a fan - COMP usa had two choices got the ANTEC reference that was cool (connection to power supply AND a 3 pin connector to hook ONE wire to fan speed pin on MB

Now the board is saying "problem with system memory" and powers down.

My problem is I do not have spare parts to swap out and test with. My older PCs are not atx power. So come Monday I will have to work with newegg on what to do. Or should I try Corsair directly. anyway I am off to the asus and corsair forums.

Thoughts from those in the know on this?

Two sticks of 256 memory would have been better so you could have used the dual channel DDR feature on this motherboard (sorry off topic)
Try just connecting a normal 60mm CPU fan to the header to see if the fault disapears (some motherboards have a problem sensing slow 80mm fans)
More information needed, not sure what fan you are talking about? CPU? I take it? Martin Replying helps further our knowledge, without comment leaves us wondering.

Bought one stick of memory now, and will add another later when I can afford it. Most reviews give only about a 5% boost to dual channel so I would get more memory more for having a full gig. I am a programmer after all and my tools like memory.

I would not think the fan is the problem now, though maybe ten bucks on a standard fan is worth ruling it out.

my wonderment is, is it the memory stick, CPU or motherboard and wondered if others have experienced this and what they found the porblem to be. If I had more memory at hand I would swap it and know but I do not.

is there some way with just a CPU , mb and one stick memory to see what is the problem?

more info,

wondering if others know about this?

looking at corsair forum it seems that "older" corsair cmx - 3200c2 memory has problems with nforce2 boards.

the stick I got was cmx512-3200c2pt
and the version is xms3203v1.1 0251083

looking on corsair forum it seems this version level is the one you find in the forum as having problems with the system posting. Do not know for sure as I do not have any other memory sticks.

10 bucks on standard fan did the trick - The Mobo posts to the IDE section now. In a short while I will add the other peripherals and try installing winXP.

the fan was a compusa 10 buck geberic with 3 pin connector that pulled power OFF THE MOBO and had a wire for fan speed. That is the trick for my problem.

of course I have not specced out the ram yet.
