I've been asked to set up an additional phone in an office.

Someone else will be running the cable - I'm supposed to program the Merlin system.

The manual I'm working with is the "Merlin Legend Communications Release 7.0" (Quick Reference) - 1999.

I see that there is a free port on the "Communications System Control Unit".

So I plugged in a phone directly (pending the completion of the cable run) and tried to dial the corresponding extension.

I go directly to voice mail. Not even one ring.

The fact is that these ports go with extensions that never had phones connected to them. The extensions just had voice mail. That's a waste of ports if you ask me.

Anyway, I need the phone to ring and *also* have voice mail.

I'm looking at p. 108 of the manual "Telephone does not ring" but unless I'm missing something, there is nothing about voicemail. I'll keep reading.

In the meantime though, does anyone have an idea why the caller goes directly to voicemail?

Thanks for your help!

Correction! It DOES ring once (just once) and if I am next to it and get it on the first ring, I can talk. I can also call out no problem.

Check the Coverage Rings - Extensions, More, More, Coverage Delay, Group, Extension Number, Enter.

Backspace out the current setting and put in a higher number.
