I’m just wondering if any of you use ASR?....does it work as advertised?... or is there a better way to recover a windows 2003 server. My plan is to create ASRs for all the servers and store the data on DVD-RW perform this about once per month, what are your experiences with ASR or any other way to get this done, even if it requires third party software. Or is Varitas 11d good enough for a complete system and date restore?

Thanks

I use vertias IDR for some servers and ASR for others (due to cost of veritas) I much prefer vertias, but i have tested restoring my servers with ASR successfully.

One thing i wasn't excepting with ASR was that you must put your scsi drivers on to floppy disk as well ( i backup to tape at night and do the ASR once every three months- the ASR does not include scsi drivers for tape drive)

The ASR backup only backs up the C:\ not anyother partions.

You must also edit your asr to added tape drivers
To restore i required:

1 ASR floppy
1 scsci driver floppy
1 asr tape containing C:\
1 tape containing E:\ and F:\ drives
1 windows OS CD.
+ i keep a copy of the raid config.

Also after my restore of windows 2003 r2 using asr it turned on windows firewall, this is a known bug.

It was easy was no problem to turn if off again, just need to be aware. As none of the users could access the server.

I would definatly test your ASR if possible.
