Have a running total show in group header, but calculate in group foot

I have a formula for calculating records in a group in a group footer. This is fine
The only thing I am having issues with is moving the number that is evaluated in the group footer to the group header once the running total has totalled and reset
Ie. Calculate the running total count and then take the number and plug it into a column in a group header
Ive tried using variables to hold the value coming out of the running total and tried evaluateafter in the group header but to no avail
Any suggestions on the logical course of events is welcome
