Has anyone successfully been able to use the SDM client to upgrade System Manager on VMware?

Almost but..

Trying to upgrade from 7.0.1.3 to 7.1. SDM client fails to recognize VMware resources although the logs show the client did see them. Can't click upgrde. Documentation is useless.

Can you say a little more about the environment? Have you been able to add your vCenter into SDM client or are you connecting directly to an AVP host system? Are you getting an error on the certificate or some other issue?

I ran the upgrade in my lab with SMGR 7.0 on standalone esxi 5.5 no vCenter. As soon as I tried adding the esxi host on to SDM getting this error "Retrieving host certificate info is failed. The license ont he host does not support VMWare API which is required by SDM. Please contact VMware for appropriate licenses." So now i'm trying to find a way how to install the cert in my esxi host signed by SMGR. Any help would be appreciated.

@dleuen - Running VMware 5.5 and getting ready to upgrade to 6.5 once I upgrade to Aura 7.1. Almost finished the SMGR upgrade. Got all the way through to the point where the resources where supposed to be set for the host environment however the SDM client didn't recognize the host resources even though the logs show it downloaded them. Answer from Avaya was not good. After I replied they are looking at it again.

@jtc22 - You don't necessarily have to have the certificate signed by System Manager. You just need to re-generate the default certificate created during the VMware install since by default the hostname does not match the certificate subject (I think the default certificate uses localhost.local). VMware provides the a CLI tool to regenerate the certificate which will use the correct hostname. Requires reboot of the host. They do provide instructions for replacing the self-generated certificate (rui.xxx) files with a third party certificate and key. There are plenty of blogs on the web describing how to use OpenSSL to create a CSR/Key. Bigger issue comes with vCenter. Depending on version you may have some challenges updating host thumbprints. When reconnecting the host in VMware you will either get a failure or be prompted to update the thumbprint. If you get a failure the easiest fix it to update the vCenter software to the latest SP. VMware does provide a tutorial on how to change the thumbprint on the earlier versions.

Avaya documentation on the process is abysmal. I've already submitted documentation change requests however if you see something wrong or unclear in the documentation please submit a documentation change request to infodev@avaya.com

@jimbojimbo - sounds like you have Avaya looking into it and have verified your certificates. The only thing I was going to mention here is if you are connecting to a vCenter the certificate for the vCenter either has to be signed by a CA or by SMGR.

@jtc22 - The error you posted means you are probably trying to use the free version of ESXi which does not support the VMware Management API. Check the licensed features of your ESXi host to be sure it shows vSphere API.

The issue is with the SDM on System Manager. Download the latest SDM stand alone client and then upgrade System Manager. The stand alone client should have a patch with it. Once you upgrade System Manager from the stand alone client it will upgrade the System Manager SDM. We had the same issue.

I'm not using the System Manager SDM to upgrade System Manager. I am using the SDM client. I have been using they 7.1 SDM client. The 7.1 SDM client does not have a patch for it in PLDS. If you know of a patch would love the information.

Were you able to successfully upgrade System Manager using the vCenter server environment or just an ESXi host?

There is a latest greatest SDM client released June 12th on PLDS. Is this the one with the patch?

@Wanebo - I'm not using 7.0, I'm using 7.1.

Resolution - Upgraded the vCenter Server to 6.5. New PSN - must use datamigration146 instead of the original 144. Was able to complete the upgrade of System Manager from 7.0.1 to 7.1.
