Harware Wizard when PC machine starts 1

I use a laptop with a wireless network connection. Since I installed the network adapter software, every time I turn on the machine, the “New Hardware Wizard” comes on. How can I stop it from popping up all the time as it is really annoying?

Usually the issue is not XP, but the way in which the hardware driver set installation program completes.

Do this:

1. Boot in Safe Mode Without networking, Device Manager, View, Show all hidden devices, and remove all entries for the new NIC;

Reboot.

2. Boot normally and let XP "discover" the new advice. Let the installation finish completely. Wait, be patient.

Reboot.

If the problem persists, update the drivers for the new NIC and repeat the process. Again, 95% if the problem is that the driver install process does not notify the New Hardware Wizard it is finished.

If it continues, the process can be ended with a registry edit.

I will try your steps meanwhile, I don’t know where to start when it comes to registry edit. I hope it won’t get to that level.

I started the machine in Safe Mode but I could not delete any of the entries for the NIC. I got the following message: “Failed to uninstall the device. The device may be required to boot up the computer”. I tried all of them.
Is there another way to remove them? There are about five entries in there.

Leave anything saying "mini-port" alone.

Device Manager, view, show all hidden devices.

Uninstall only the new adapter.

Reboot, let the "Hardware Wizard" find it again. Let it complete the installation.

It would help if you said make, model of laptop; make, model and type of network adapter.

Yeah I did not touch “mini-port” only “Wireless 54-G”.
The laptop is a Gateway 450SX
The card is a Linksys WPC54G

For the Linksys WPC54g it is best to do the "Have Disk" rather than let XP choose the drivers.

Download the newest driver set if you do not have it already: wpc54g_driver_utility_v1.21.zip, dated 6/24/03
Available from: ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/network/

Expand the .zip file to a folder.

Use Device Manager and double-click the wpc54g device, Driver, Update the driver, and choose the second radio button to manually select the driver (Advanced). At that point you need to follow the script with when presented selecting the "Have Disk" option and pointing at your unzipped folder. When it finds the correct .inf file for the install, select Okay several times to update the driver and finish the installation.

I have a similar problem with my WinXP machine and scanner. What I have decided to do is unplug the scanner when not in use. I have updated the scanners drivers and installed them in safe mode but still have the same problem. I would appreciate it if you can let me know what that registry edit is.

I am still using the driver I got when I purchase this adapter. I will try to update from the link above and see what happens although I still want to delete all the other entries on the device manager list.
Is there a support page for this adapter on Microsoft site like the one for scanners?

A full manual uninstall of the adapter is a real pain. If you search the Linksys Forum of broadbandreports.com you will see instructions I have there to do it, but it is several pages long. Essentially you need to run a good registy search and delete all entries for Linksys and Broadcom; look at your installed driver folders and remove the c:\windows\system32 references to the NDIS drives referenced by name that you find in the driver folder that you downloaded; and clear all the installation and other entries made by the installer.

My advice earlier should be sufficient. You can use Device Manager to upgrade the driver set if you specify that you would like to identify the location for the driver files, and "Have Disk".

Could you advice me on how to search the registry as I never done this before.
I would like to really take out everything that has to do with this driver and start anew.

Start button, Run, CMD
regedit

click Edit on the top menu.

i. Find, enter linksys

right-click and delete the entry
hit the F3 function key
repeat

ii. repeat (i), but enter "broadcom"

iii. Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs

remove anything that says Linksys

iv. Do a Start button, Search

bcm*.*
lb*.*
bor*.*
pcand*.*
lsan*.*

and delete all entries each time.

Reboot.

v. The hard part, look for possible installer entries for uninstall of the Linksys adapter. I use jv16:

I was able to find some “bcm” files I took them out, I installed the update of the driver but I still get the Hardware wizard that is trying to install some PCI Modem as usual. I even used "jv16" I removed some Linksys stuff.
