Your connections had to be good to install Windows so it sounds like you were unlucky enough to get a bad drive. Try booting to a diskette then see if you can do a directory of the C: drive. I would believe the error message and try to return the HD. Most drives have a fast exchange warranty thru the manufacturer if they fail within an extended period of time; usually several years.
before returning, did you completely fdisk and format the disk yourself or did you let the xp setup program do it? i would get a startup disk, boot to DOS, and fdisk and format that sucker. then, reinstall xp and see what happens. those messages are usually correct, but, they can mislead at times.
