On boot: Windows XP logo appears followed immediately by:

Error message on boot: Premaster HD: Smart status bad backup and replace
F1 to resume

The F1 does nothing

This looks like the SMART BIOS of the Hard Drive telling your system it has a problem. The drive is either completely dead or will die soon.
