Hi,
Bit of help / advise required please. I have a rather old PC which plods along quite happily, running Win98SE, but I want to go to Broadband and thought it best to upgrade to Windows XP.
However when I tested to see if the PC would upgrade to XP, I got the message, hardware to old to upgrade. I understand that whether I upgrade or install I will still have the problem. Other than buying a new PC does anyone know a way round this please...........
My PC spec is 8gb hard drive, 60mb total memory, 640k conventional and the bios date is 1999.
Thanks

Not true, Paparazzi

She wants to upgrade to win xp and we were explaining she had work to do, for one she would have to upgrade her ram.
She took the computer apart somewhat to get info.

All was going fine.

Hi guys,
Last time I checked I wasn't a guy, honest.....lol. I do admit to having the odd blonde moment though and garebo, I think we could start a trend in Wellingtons!!!!!

Yes it's been fun dismantling my PC, (not very often I get the chance to take things to bits)

I think I need to make a decision here though and I think it's probably best I take your advice and stick with what I've got. I'll see about getting more memory etc and see how it goes. If it all goes pear shaped, I'll buy a new PC!, maybe even a pink one.....perhaps not, bit too girlie.

So thanks once again to you all, you've been great and I will let you know how it all turns out. If I manage to blow things up, well it makes life interesting.

I didn't take the time to analyze each post but I fail to see the reason for upgrading to windows xp. If 98SE does what you need it to do then why incur additonal cost and the inherent slowdown of a more resource demaning operating system? Upgrading to 128MB RAM is a very good idea. If you can wing it a full format and reinstall of the drive would also be nice, just to freshen things up, though not necessary. If you are going to be using windows 98 with cable internet what you really want to do is download a little program from speedguide.net called the TCP Optimizer. It can be found here:

2 blondes in wellingtons, lol.

Again, Jan, your input needed.
Tell us where you are and where you want to go.
Let me make a guess here.
You have your computer all put back together and you arent having any major windows probs so all we have to do is get you set up for broadband.
That being the case, all you have to do is find out with supplier you want and possibly get a network card if you dont have one. Whomever you get for a supplier will likely be setting you up with some kind of modem for broadband, cable modem, DSL.
Do you have a network card in your computer? They look like a single place where you would plug a phone cord into, only a bit bigger. If you do have a network card then all you have to do is call your supplier and they will set you up.

For what its worth, i've had an AMD K6-2 450 running XP Pro on 128mb of ram fine. You'll need to configure the display for best performance but there were no other issues. This did have an agp slot with a RageII card though. My ex used to use it for putting together a free magazine in Publisher and it ran that and Paint Shop Pro 7 fine. Doom 3 was a little slow... ;-)

She is already aware of the fact that she CAN likely get win xp installed and running ok.
She just has to decide wether she wants to or not.
Looks like she is staying with win 98, but she has all the info already to make her choice.
